Pay it forward at Florida Starbucks lasts for 2 days

Pay it forward at Florida Starbucks lasts for 2 days

It was a pretty good run while it lasted.

It started around 7 a.m. Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Florida. A woman in the drive-thru at a local Starbucks paid for her own drink, and for the drink of the person in the car behind her. That man returned the favor and paid for the driver behind him. And so did the next one, and the one after that and the one after that.

In fact, 378 people paid it forward until driver number 379 pulled up. That's when it came to a screeching halt, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The employee asked if a woman in a Jeep if would like to participate and she said no.

That was only the end of it for that day though.

The same thing happened again on Thursday, according to In fact, a barista told "Today" that it happens a whole lot at that location. The previous record was 141 participants.

It ended around 2 p.m. on Thursday though when a blogger deliberately broke the chain, says the newspaper. Peter Schorsch wrote that he thought customers weren't paying out of generosity, but out of guilt. So, he apparently drove to the store, bought two drinks, and then declined to pay for the person behind him.

The Times was not able to confirm with Starbucks on Thursday that the chain had been broken.

Some people told the Tampa Bay Times that they did it because it made them feel connected to the other customers. Some said they just didn't want to be the jerk to end the chain. One guy told the newspaper that he even came back to do it again.
