Interesting trade deadline day to come; will Brewers be involved?

By Jay Sorgi. CREATED Jul 31, 2014

Every year around July 31st, rumors abound of big moves to come before the MLB-mandated deadline for non-waiver trades.

The Milwaukee Brewers have been connected in recent days to Tampa Bay Rays starter David Price and Boston Red Sox ace Jon Lester.  Lester appears to be out with this report from Jon Heyman of CBS...

...and Price doesn't seem to be in the cards anymore, though in the world of MLB wheeling and dealing, you never know.

Will the Brewers make a move?

"I can't get into any of that at this point," admitted Brewers GM Doug Melvin on 620WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."

"It's pretty sensitive with other's hard to discuss, but their names have been out there on the blogs and the rumor mills."

The tea leaves seem to be showing division rivals Pittsburgh and St. Louis - the two teams closest to the division-leading Brewers in the standings - may both be in the game for those aces.

However, Melvin said he believes the team as it stands today can still contend and win the NL Central.

"We like our MLB team.  We've stayed healthy.  We feel like we can win this division, but it's going to be a dogfight."

Melvin cited the fact that teams can also make waiver-related moves in August - something the Pittsburgh Pirates effectively did in 2013 to make the playoffs.

"Sometimes people make a lot of July deadlines, but sometimes there are quality players we can acquire in August, too," said Melvin.

"You can get some of those players later on after teams fall out of the pennant race."
