Like sweet corn? You'll love this news!
I think farming has to be one of the absolutely toughest ways to make a living. There are very few other occupations that are almost 100% reliant on the weather. And the news breaking today is that even when the weather is good, it can be bad news for farmers.
The weather has been so good this year that there is a bumper crop of corn. One local farmer says he "is drowning in corn." That sounds like a good problem, right?
Well, it might be a good problem for you and me, but that's not the case for farmers.
The great growing conditions mean that there is an overabundance of corn. That means that the value of all that corn is not what it is during a down year. That means that corn farmers will have a tough time making as much money as they make when the weather is awful and the crops are less bountiful.
I know. I know. It seems like farmers are always whining. It's either too much rain or not enough. It's either too hot or too cold. And now when the weather has been great, they're still struggling.
What does it mean for you and me?
