A Local School District Tells Michelle Obama To Butt Out

A Local School District Tells Michelle Obama To Butt Out

Good for the Waterford School District!

Starting next year, the Waterford School District will no longer participate in the National School Lunch Program.  Why? Because the new so-called "healthy food" requirements are so onerous, unrealistic and just plain dumb that it no longer makes sense to continue.

By opting out, the Waterford School District loses federal money that covers the cost of free and reduced-price meals for poorer students.  By giving up the federal money though, the district gets the chance to run its food program as it thinks best.

Under the Federal rules, the district is required to put fruit and vegetables on the plates of students (even if the students don't want them and throw them away).  There are also strict limits on calories (which results in kids going hungry), the type of milk that can be served, and the type and amount of ingredients that can be used to prepare food.

By staying in the National School Lunch Program, Waterford High School would also have probably had to shut down a very popular coffee shop run by special education students because of the amount of sugar used in certain specialty coffee drinks!

The Michelle Obama driven initiative seems to be a total disaster - but some poorer school districts are trapped (because they can't afford to subsidize the cost of food for poor students).

During the 1 p.m. hour of Tuesday's radio show, we'll discuss whether the Waterford School District is doing the right thing by opting out of the National School Lunch Program?

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the Comments section - and be sure to check back latr to hear a replay of the segment.
