Union No

Union No

By Jeff Wagner. CREATED Feb 16, 2014

It didn't exactly turn out the way the people whose only experience with unions was watching Norma Rae hoped it would.

For the past couple of years, the United Auto Workers has expended a ton of effort and money in trying to unionize employees at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  This plant is the only Volkswagen plant in the United States and was, for a variety of reasons, seem by the UAW as its best chance to get a foothold in the South.

Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice, men and union organizers.

Friday, workers at the VW plant rejected efforts to unionize by a vote of 712 to 626.  Union boses have not taken the loss well.

By the way, is there any doubt why union organizers continue to delay a vote on unionization at Palermo's? Could it be that they realize that they're going to lose?

So why did workers in Chattanooga say "Union No" and what does it say about the future of the union movement in the United States?

We'll discuss the issue during the 1 p.m. hour of Monday's radio show.  Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section - and be sure to check back later to hear a replay of the segment.
