The Milwaukee DA's Office Gets Two Right

The Milwaukee DA's Office Gets Two Right

CREATED Feb 3, 2012

I have been extremely critical of the way the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has handled the ongoing John Doe investigation into the activities of former aides to now-Governor Walker.  Frankly, the delays and the leaks border on unconscionable.

Still, let's give credit where it's due.

First, the decision to not charge the guy who used a gun to stop an in-progress robbery at Aldi's earlier this week is absolutely the correct move. It's possible that the DA's Office could have brought charges against the man in an effort to prove some point.  This however would have been a complete waste of resources (in part because no jury would have ever convicted him of anything).

Second, the DA's Office apparently can act in a timely fashion when it wants to.  After being advised of concerns about County Supervisor Johnny Thomas "in late Fall", a sting operation was set up immediately leading to evidence of alleged criminal behavior on the part of Thomas.  Criminal charges were then issued within weeks.  I guess the wheels of justice can turn quickly when there's proper motivation.

I don't know if these two cases represent a change in approach by the DA's Office or simply prove the old saying that "even a blind squirrel finds an acorn occasionally".  Regardless, I think they got it right this week - twice!
