Ronald McDonald has a new look. The longtime mascot of the McDonald’s chain has been given an upscale makeover, although his bright color scheme remains unchanged.
Gone are the yellow jumpsuit, stripey socks and matching shirt. The updated look features yellow pants, a striped rugby shirt and a red jacket accessorized with a red bow tie and yellow gloves. The floppy red shoes with yellow laces remain unchanged, as does the matching hair and face paint.
The makeover comes courtesy of a theatrical stylist, reports CNBC, which also says of the news look, “His hair is more coiffed. His vibe is less creepy. And—how shall we politely say this?—he looks slightly less clown-like.”
The updated look has been two years in the making, McDonalds spokesperson Becca Hary tells CNBC, which reports, “His new duds were designed by Ann Hould-Ward, who won a Tony award for her costume design of the Disney play ‘Beauty and the Beast.’”
"I've worked with some really big names over the years," Hould-Ward said in a statement. "Suiting up a living legend was a real thrill."
McDonald’s introduced the Ronald character in 1963 and he made his first national TV appearance two years later. His most recent makeover came in 2005, CNBC reports.
His name has been in the news lately after rival Taco Bell unveiled its new breakfast memo with a TV ad campaign featuring endorsements from real-life men named Ronald McDonald.
