Happy 92nd NFL birthday, Packers!

By Jay Sorgi. CREATED Aug 27, 2013

The Green Bay Packers are technically 94 years and 16 days old today.

But 92 years ago, they gained their NFL baptism of sorts.

When Curly Lambeau started the team in 1919, he got the Indian Packing Company (IPC) to sponsor the team - hence the name Packers.

The Packers web site says that the ACME Packing Company had bought the IPC, during the same time period in which the American Professional Football Assocation (APFA) was founded.

On Aug. 27, 1921, ACME's owners agreed to sponsor the Packers and pay the fee to join the APFA.

One year later, the league became known as the National Football League.

That season, Curly Lambeau was the team's leading scorer, with two touchdowns, three field goals and five extra points.

They played their first NFL game on October 23 against the Minneapois Marines, winning 7-6.

Since then, the Packers have won 13 NFL championships, the most of any franchise.
