Web spin-off for cult series 'Veronica Mars' is a go

UPN network's "Veronica Mars" first aired on Sept. 22, 2004 and was canceled in 2007.

A student by day, private investigator by night, lead actress Kristen Bell as "Veronica" accumulated a cult following over the show's short, three-year run. But although the show was finished, her fans certainly weren't.

Six years later, on Mar. 13, 2013, the mystery series creator Rob Thomas, along with Bell, opened an historic Kickstarter campaign to fund a "Veronica Mars" feature film. And now, Thomas has signed on to do a web spin-off as well on The CW network after the crazed reaction to his impending film. 

CW President Mark Pedowitz shared the news at a meeting of the Television Critics Association on Jan. 15, noting that the cast and debut date remain unconfirmed.

Records show that the "Veronica Mars" campaign was the: "fastest project to reach $1 million" and then $2 million, the "all-time highest-funded project in film category" and Kickstarter's "third highest-funded project in Kickstarter history" with the "most project backers of any project in Kickstarter history," accoriding to the site. Within 10 hours of accepting donations, Thomas and Bell had reached their $2 million crowdfunding goal with a myriad of fan incentives, and went on to raise a total of $5.7 million.

"Kristen and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot. They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact," wrote Thomas on the fundraiser page. "Their reaction was, if you can show there’s enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we’re on board. So this is it. This is our shot. I believe it's the only one we've got."

That's all the "Veronica Mars" fans -- or "little marshmallows" as they're affectionately referred to in the pledge blogs -- needed to hear.

The "Veronica Mars" campaign unbelievably closed at 91,585 backers with $5,702,153 banked.
