Former German race driver Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has been released from a French hospital, according to CNN.

Schumacher, who is a seven-time Formula One (F1) World Champion, is a racing legend.

He suffered a severe head injury while skiing with his son in December 2013 in the French Alps.

He was placed in a medically-induced coma after the accident at a hospital in Grenoble, France. He woke up from the coma on June 16 and has now been moved to Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, according to the BBC.

Schumacher, 45, is an experienced skier. A team that investigated the accident says that Schumacher hit a rock under the snow and was catapulted face first into another rock. A small camera attached to his helmet helped investigators determine what happened.

He was skiing on unmarked slopes at the time of the crash.

Schumacher holds many of Formula One's driver records, including most championships, race victories, fastest laps, pole positions and most races won in a single season (13 in 2004). In 2002, he became the only driver in Formula One history to finish in the top three in every race of a season.

Schumacher retired from racing in 2012.
