Residents split on proposed golf course in Sheboygan County

TOWN OF WILSON -- A possible golf course development in Sheboygan County is getting mixed reviews from residents who live nearby.

Kohler Resorts recently submitted plans to the Town of Wilson for new golf resort just north of Kohler-Andrae State Park. Mary Faydash lives six doors down from that property and is concerned the impending project may ruin existing nature.

"Putting in a golf course doesn't mean the land is being preserved, the land will be deforested, the black river is running through this particular piece of land," Faydash said. "One of the largest impacts from a golf course is the fertilizer run off into the water."

Faydash said she enjoys golf, but she worries that her neighbors would lose a lot if people tee'd off down the road. She is trying to rally support for her cause.

"We don't want to have to trade this beautiful piece of land and the impact on us for the very small percentage of the population," she said. "You know, wealthy people who would come to this particular course."

But Kohler owns the land, and there are many supporters who think the proposal makes par.

"Well there certainly are benefits," said supporter Mark Leider. "There would be jobs both permanent and during construction. The track record of the Kohler company on doing recreational and hospitality facilities is exemplary, nobody challenges that."

Kohler will present plans to Wilson's planning and zoning board on Monday. Board members will take public comment n‎ext month.

This would be Kohler's fifth course in Sheboygan County.
