East side institution has some issues during remodel

MILWAUKEE - An east side institution has some problems on its health inspection.  At one point this sandwich shop was almost shut down.

It's Koppa's Fulbeli Deli on Farwell. The deli and grocery was fined on its July inspection for not cleaning up all the violations found back in June.
The owner was not there when we stopped by, but did call us back. He bought the business a year ago and is remodeling.  He says that lead to a bad health inspection.
Last month the inspector found no expiration dates on deli salads.  A spray bottle with chemicals was sitting on deli trays, and an employee touched her face and did not change gloves.
Also the inspector found bad produce for sale, like wrinkled peppers and browning cabbage. Koppa's was told to throw it out.
A fly swatter was in the deli.  The owner said it was being moved and not being used.
After they cleaned most of it up, the health department allowed Koppa's to stay open.  But on its July inspection, there were still some food contamination risks.
The owner says "we are improving" and claims he is working with the health department to educate employees.
