WAUWATOSA - If cholesterol blocks arteries, road construction endangers traffic flow through the communities' lifelines.
Construction on the new zoo interchange entered its latest phase today - Watertown Plank Road, which also happens to host southeast Wisconsin's most critical emergency care: a level one trauma center and children's hospital.
"To put it bluntly, you and your family are dependent on quick access to our medical facilities," Mike Thiel, Director of Security Services at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, tells TODAY'S TMJ4.
"It literally means life and death."
Thiel oversees a team assigned specifically to prepare contingency plans and alternate routes to keep emergency response times down. The hospitals have hired new communications experts to assist emergency crews with real-time traffic updates.
"The project has really forced us to look at how we communicate with ambulances in route," Thiel adds.
