MILWAUKEE - It's every parent's worst nightmare: a child's curiosity leads him to something dangerous.

A three year-old boy is in critical condition after he shot himself with his mother's gun.

Police confirm the accidental shooting happened around 2:00 p.m. in the 8600 block of 106th Street on Milwaukee's far northwest side.

Family members spoke with TODAY'S TMJ4 after the shooting and identified the toddler as Kevin Donald. They said Kevin was playing outside when he climbed into his mom's car and found her gun in the glove compartment.

Kevin's mom and aunt were upstairs.

"It's just something that no mom or anyone wants to see," neighbor Jamequa Noel told TODAY'S TMJ4. "It's just sad. I just pray he's OK and that's all I could do is drop to my knees and pray."

Police say no one is in custody at this time, but they will continue to investigate. Officers towed the car and recovered the gun as well.

Kevin was taken to Children's Hospital where family members say he underwent surgery to stop the bleeding.
