Republican bill would affect Wis. retirees

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Public workers' retirement benefits would be based on the worker's five highest annual earning periods instead of three under a Republican sponsored bill introduced in the Legislature.

The measure could result in lower retirement payouts for some workers.

But the Wisconsin State Journal reports Tuesday that the bill is unlikely to pass any time soon. Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says it is one idea being examined, but it will not pass this session.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says the Senate will likely wait to see what happens in the Assembly before deciding whether to take up the issue.

The proposal was criticized by Democrats and the Wisconsin Education Association Council as being unfair and unlikely to save the state much money.
