Questions surround departure of former Marquette president

MILWAUKEE - Lots of questions remain after Marquette's president abruptly stepped down. Marquette's not saying much, and Father Scott Pilarz isn't saying anything.

There's a lot of mystery surrounding his departure.
"It just seemed like he's not being upfront with us," said Marquette student Sarah Hauer, "and he always has been."
Hauer and her co-worker Tessa Fox are student journalists at The Marquette Tribune.
The sudden resignation of Father Scott Pilarz on Friday has them asking some obvious questions in a thought-provoking editorial.
"Why did he leave and why didn't he tell us himself?"
Pilarz is cutting ties with Marquette after two years on the job.
Students say the Jesuit priest was approachable on campus, communicated with students, taught a class, and lived in a student apartment building.
"Oh absolutely out of character," said Fox when asked about the sudden resignation.
"It just didn't come off as the Father Pilarz that we know," said Hauer.
Pilarz has been silent so far about his decision to leave The school paper reports his class on Monday was canceled.
In a written statement Pilarz said "I believe the time has come to consider other apostolic opportunities for me as a Jesuit priest."
Students hope those aren't his final words.
"We also just want to know as students because he's our president too. He's not just a story for us," said Fox.
TODAYS TMJ4 has requested an interview with Father Pilarz. The University says he was not available on Tuesday.
