Poll: 'Clear majority' of Americans support legalizing marijuana
WASHINGTON - A new Gallup poll shows a "clear majority" of Americans - 58% - supports the legalization of marijuana.
For the first time, a majority in the country has favored pot legalization since Gallup started conducting the survey over 40 years ago.
It's an unprecedented jump of ten points from the same phone poll done just last year.
Although marijuana is considered an illegal drug by the federal government, 20 states now allow it for medical use.
Washington state and Colorado have recently passed laws permitting recreational use of pot.
Next year, the issue is likely to appear on the ballot in other states from California to Maine.
