Feds: Fewer than 900 in Wis. selected health plans

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The number of Wisconsin residents who actually managed to sign up for a health insurance plan through the new online exchanges is fewer than 900.
Millions of Americans tried to sign up when the HealthCare.gov website became active Oct. 1, but the site has been plagued with problems. The numbers released by the federal government Wednesday indicate how ineffective the website has been.
More than 19,000 Wisconsin residents applied for a health plan through the online exchanges. They were applying for coverage on behalf of nearly 35,000 people -- for example, themselves, their spouses and children.
Wisconsin is relying on the federal website because the state Legislature chose not to create a state-run marketplace. Federal officials say they hope to get the website working smoothly by the end of this month.
