Fake grenade causes scare at Southridge Mall

By James Kust. CREATED Dec 6, 2013 - UPDATED: Dec 6, 2013

GREENDALE - A 75-year-old West Allis man was arrested after a fake grenade on his car's dashboard caused a scare at Southridge Mall Friday morning, police say.

Greendale Police say they were doing routine checks of handicapped parking tags at the mall when they saw what looked like a real grenade on the dashboard of a vehicle.

Police quickly located the owner of the car, who said the grenade was fake. As a precautionary measure, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called to examine the grenade.

A large area of the mall was taped off as a result. The bomb squad declared the scene safe around 11:30 a.m. Nobody was injured during the incident.

Southridge Mall released a statement about the incident Friday afternoon:

“In order to maintain a safe shopping environment, Southridge Mall enforces a strict code of conduct which includes prohibiting weapons on property. We’re working closely with the Village of Greendale Police Department as they investigate this incident..."
