Charges handed down for man who held up New Berlin Pharmacy

By Michele Fiore and Charles Benson. CREATED Jul 16, 2014 - UPDATED: Jul 16, 2014

MILWAUKEE - Scott Wimer is now charged with using a shotgun to rob the New Berlin Pharmacy.  He says he's abused alcohol and pain pills for years.

One week ago police say Wimer walked into the pharmacy and demanded pain pills. He later told police he took all 21 of them at once because he didn't want to go back to jail, according to the criminal complaint.
Wimer was in a suicide prevention vest in court to face armed robbery and gun possession charges. After the standoff in New Berlin, Wimer told police he was suicidal, homeless, an alcoholic and his wife has cancer.
"I think a lot of what took over was the alcohol," said Paula Wimer.
Paula agreed to share his story. She says Wimer was once an excellent welder. He turned to pain pills for a back injury and alcohol seemed to be his solution to all his problems.
"We can baby sit him and baby sit him but Scott, if he wants to drink, he'll lie," said Paula.
Last week, Wimer took off in a car owned by her daughter's boyfriend. When he didn't return the family starting calling him. They said they didn't know he was inside the New Berlin Pharmacy when he answered and his comments seemed odd.
"His words to me: 'these guys don't like me, why don't people like me.' I said Scott ,come home we need the car."
Police later called the family to tell them what happened.
"We are always trying to help him." said Jordan Smith "We are always there for him."
Smith is the daughter's boyfriend. The family is hoping this time Wimer will get the help he needs.
"I'm praying for them everyday and hoping that everything will get better eventually," said Smith.
The family says Wimer has been in and out of rehab and hospitals for alcohol and suicide attempts.
