Burke OK with tax cut, concerned about deficit

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke says she supports lowering taxes, but she's concerned about the long-term effects of Gov. Scott Walker's $100 million property tax cut racing through the Legislature.
Burke says in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that "there's no doubt tax cuts are very good." She says no one can argue with a tax cut, but she is looking at the longer-term implications.
New estimates by the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau released Tuesday show the state's projected budget shortfall in 2015 will grow 33 percent to $725 million. Burke says she is concerned about that growth.
Even if those numbers hold up, the projected structural deficit would be much less than the average since 1997 that's been around $1.6 billion.
