Wis. agents seize 70K packs of untaxed cigarettes

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin revenue agents have seized 70,000 packs of cigarettes that arrived in the state without tax stamps.

The state's excise tax on a pack of cigarettes is $2.52, so the Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/12rN1sB ) that the state would have lost more than $175,000 in revenue on the cigarettes.

Revenue officials say the cigarettes came from a company located on the Winnebago reservation in northeastern Nebraska that's owned by Ho-Chunk Inc.

Deputy Revenue Secretary Jack Jablonski says the cigarettes were bound for retailers on Wisconsin reservations or trust lands for the St. Croix Chippewa, Ho-Chunk Nation and Bad River Band. He says regular shipments have been happening for some time.

Jablonski says it's illegal to transport unstamped cigarettes through Wisconsin without a license.

No charges have been filed.
