CEDARBURG - A funeral has been scheduled at Lumen Christi Catholic Church after a parent and prominent member of their school's small learning community was hit and killed by a car on Interstate 43.
"This wasn't just a parent. This was somebody who truly, truly was a servant leader," said Jeff Wentzler.
Kathy Weiss, 46, has been remembered as a wonderful woman who will be missed. The mother of three was killed as she walked across I-43 in Cedarburg Tuesday morning.
A first visitation has been set for Friday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt and Bartlet Funeral Home on the 10200 block of North Port Washington Road in Mequon.
A second visitation has been scheduled for 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. Friday morning at Lumen Christi, 2700 West Mequon Road, with the funeral Mass to follow at 12:00 p.m.
Wenzler knew Kathy through his nonprofit work. He also used to be a youth pastor at Lumen Christi Catholic Church where Kathy belonged.
Wentzler was called in Wednesday morning to help counsel children, parents, and teachers at the church's school.
"I said, ‘what did she represent to you?’ And the kids just started talking about all the amazing things she represented and how she was just so positive and how she was such a giver," he said.
Wentzler adds that the kids asked a lot of tough questions.
"’What do we do?’ That's sometimes the toughest thing for kids to wrestle with is how to connect and what do we say at a funeral," he said.
It’s something adults have a hard time figuring out. Several of Weiss's friends were too upset to say anything more than she was an amazing and loving woman, something Wentzler knows will help everyone who knew her honor her memory.
"I saw something very special not only in that church but in this community," he remembered. "So, I have a lot of hope and a lot of faith that they'll get through it."
Authorities are still trying to figure out why Weiss was walking along the highway. Meanwhile, the pastor at the church says the family is grateful for everyone's prayers.
