PORT WASHINGTON - Police are searching for a driver who hit a teenager on her way to school and just drove away.

It happened at the intersection of Grand and Webster in Port Washington where the girl tried to walk across the street. Thankfully, she's OK. And while police try to find the driver, the girl's mother wants to find a way to make the intersection safer.

"It was not the phone call you want to hear," said Chris Fullington.

Fullington got the call Wednesday morning that her 15-year-old daughter, Nina, was hit by a car.

"It went over my toe and it hit my knee," said Nina Fullington.

Nina was walking to Port Washington High School at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning when a driver went around stopped traffic and hit her in the middle of the street.

"It isn't like she was just stepping off the curb or something," Chris said. "She was in the middle of the road. How can you not see a pedestrian crossing in the middle of the road?"

Chris Fullington wants something done about it, whether it a crossing guard, a light, or anything else to make the road safe. Chris is a school bus driver herself and says she sees near-misses at the intersection all the time.

"I'm sitting there at the stop sign, I'm watching these kids running across the street, I'm seeing traffic and I'm like ‘Oh my god, this is going to be it,’" she said.

Until it changes, Chris has this warning for everyone behind the wheel.

"People need to slow down and be careful because that's a busy area," she said.

Port Washington Police said they will meet with the school district to see if something needs to be done. As for the car that drove off in this case, it's a light colored car, possibly an SUV with a round blue and white sticker on the back.
