Half-marathon mess in Sheboygan

Half-marathon mess in Sheboygan

SHEBOYGAN- Runners who signed up for a half-marathon race in Sheboygan that isn't likely to happen still haven't received refunds.

Now complaints are pouring in.

It's a race the City of Sheboygan banished nearly a month ago.  It was set to start at the Blue Harbor Resort, but as of right now the half-marathon has no location.

But it does have state investigators looking into a potential scam.

Fay Uraynar just wants her money back.  When she didn't hear from Rapid Running, the company behind the event, she filed a complaint with the state's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

"I signed up for a race that didn't happen," said Uraynar.  "There's so much out there about this company that it seems clear they are a scam operation."

The state agency now has its eye on the company -- which took $60 to $75 per runner for the October 13 race.

And nearly 200 people signed up for it.

As complaints mount, investigators prepare to take action.

TODAY'S TMJ4's Cody Holyoke: "Will you refund runners their money?"

Rapid Running owner David Mason: "Our plan is to host an event in another community..."

Owner David Mason wants to move the event, but he won't even consider refunds until after the scheduled date for the race.

Denise Ristow took the matter on herself, getting her credit card company to reverse the charges.

"I didn't want them to keep the money. That wasn't right. They didn't hold the run, they didn't keep the money," said Ristow.

Others aren't so lucky, they're hoping the state's intervention will help the cause.

"I would like the company to refund people their money.  And I would like the company to stop.  Go out of business, whatever it takes for them to just not be functioning," said Julie Horsch.

The clock is winding down for the company.  With about two weeks to go, the owner has not yet named an alternate location.
