Family evacuates near pipeline in Jackson, Wis.

JEFFERSON - A family was out of their home Friday morning after a major gasoline pipeline started to leak.

The pipeline runs from Chicago all the way to Green Bay.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the leak occurred along a section of pipeline between the towns of Granville and Elkhart Lake.

The leak, which occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday and was noticed around noon that day, has forced people out of their homes.

A hotel room is home for the McComis family Thursday night.  Temporary shelter -- as heavy equipment digs a couple hundred feet from their front door.

"Last night the fumes were so overwhelming," said Patrick McComis, who took his family to a hotel room.

The leak has now been contained.

The next step, said Patrick Hodgins of West Shore Pipeline, is pulling out the cracked 10-inch pipe -- and laying a new one.  Then they can estimate how much gasoline has soaked into the ground.

"How much gas we lost, we're not exactly sure," said Hodgins.  "Of course they're going to do calculations, but the best way is when they restart the line is see how much went in and how much came out the other end."

Patrick McComis and his family plan to stay in a hotel room until the weekend.  He's hoping the gasoline spill hasn't ruined his well -- and made it much more difficult to return home.

"If it's got petroleum in it, you can't bathe in it," said McComis.

The pipeline system will remain shut down until it is deemed safe to reopen by regulatory authorities.

TODAY'S TMJ4 reports that work on the Jackson pipeline repair will continue Friday.  They are scheduled to replace the section of pipe that cracked.

According to a news release from the DNR, "Current testing indicates that there has been no impact to the air or water quality in the community around the location of the release, and officials on site have not detected any public safety risk."
