Milwaukee Rep. Young asks Van Hollen to investigate MPD strip searches

MILWAUKEE- Milwaukee State Representative Leon D. Young submitted a letter Thursday to the attorney general's office requesting they investigate "recent occurrences of unnecessary force and abuse within the Milwaukee Police Department."

Young told Newsradio 620 WTMJ he's worried about the behavior of the officers.  "I'm concerned that civil rights have been violated," said Young.  "I think we need an outside agency or outside department to take a look at this and investigate this."

In March, it was revealed that several MPD officers were being investigated for allegedly performing invasive strip searches on the streets.  Last week, video emerged of a MPD officer punching a suspect in the head after he had been restrained.

"Recent incidents have come to light that suggest a pattern of aggressive behavior by MPD officers," said Rep. Young. "I am extremely concerned by these allegations and request that AG Van Hollen and the Wisconsin Department of Justice thoroughly (investigate) these occurrences."

"As a former Milwaukee Police Officer, I know firsthand the struggles and pressures of the job," Rep. Young added. "However, flagrant violations of the law and a person's civil rights cannot be tolerated. Our police officers must be held accountable for their actions."
