National Weather Service deals with tighter budget
SULLIVAN - The National Weather Service in Sullivan, Wisconsin is prepared for the upcoming tornado season, despite a tighter budget.
"We're part of the (financial) pain facing all federal agencies," NWS meteorologist Rusty Kapela told me. "We're tightening up our belt, particularly in the travel department."
Instead of traveling the state for face-to-face training, the agency will conduct most of it over the Internet.
"I can conduct severe weather-spotter classes on-line with a webinar," Kapela explained. "We have technology that enables us to cut back on some of our spending."
Despite the budget cuts, the people of Wisconsin shouldn't be concerned, Kapela said.
"We're still here open for business," he vowed. "People will not see any degradation in our severe weather services."
