GAB confirms state Sen. Coggs accused of misusing state staffers
MILWAUKEE- A prominent state senator from Milwaukee has been accused of misusing senate staffers.
A former staffer filed a complaint with the state suggesting that Democratic state Senator Spencer Coggs' staff worked on his unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor in 2010. Coggs' campaign denied any wrongdoing and said he has not been contacted by investigators
The Government Accountability Board, or GAB, confirms to TODAY'S TMJ4 that a complaint was filed a year ago against state Senator Coggs and another staff member. Jana Williams made the complaint shortly after losing her job with the senator's Madison office.
She told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "I don't want to say anything obviously about the investigation with GAB and I don't want to jeopardize that. If I did not have proof of it, I would not have taken those steps."
Williams alleges Coggs' staffer Enis Ragland worked on the senator's campaign website and Facebook page. Coggs' campaign calls the allegations ridiculous. "The campaign had somebody in Milwaukee design the website. We paid the website through the campaign account and this person maintained the site," said Zak Williams, Coggs' campaign spokesperson
Jana Williams shared an email with the newspaper that she wrote after another staffer complained about allegedly doing work for the senator's family.
"These allegations are utterly ridiculous and easily disprovable," said Williams.
TODAY'S TMJ4 made repeated efforts to call and contact state Sen. Coggs to comment. But TODAY'S TMJ4 was told he is too busy. Coggs is currently running for Milwaukee city treasurer.
