MILWAUKEE - A 10-year-old girl was shot in the head on Milwaukee's north side Wednesday night, police confirmed.
Family members told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Sierra Guyton, a third-grader at Clarke Street Elementary School, continues to receive medical treatment and remains in serious, critical condition.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. near N. 28th St. and W. Clarke St. in Milwaukee. The girl was playing on the playground at Clarke Street School when she was caught in the crossfire between two people shooting at each other.
There are no suspects in custody.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett reacted strongly to news of the shooting.
"The thugs who thought nothing of having a gunfight on a playground need to be locked up for a very, very long time," he said. "It's time for the Governor and legislature to go into special session and pass mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes and to come down hard on those who value life so little."
