Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. is offering a Miley Cyrus course this summer.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Carolyn Chernoff tells the Saratogian, “I was teaching a course called Youth Culture in and out of school, and the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) became the twerk heard ’round the world. I showed that video to my class, and the students had so much to say.” This moment inspired Chernoff to create her special topics summer course called, "The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media."
In regards to gender, “Miley is sometimes seen as a wild, terrible she-beast,” Chernoff tells the Saratogian. “After the VMA performance, this young woman was seen as the end of all times.” And as for race, she says, “Miley is white but wants to appropriate a black sound. She doesn’t discuss her white privilege.”
But students take note, this course is "deceptively difficult," Chenoff forewarns, saying, “Sorry, dudes, but this is sociology. Learn to twerk on your own time,” reports the Saratogian.
We're guessing that there won't be a paper due on "how to be photographed with your tounge sticking out" either.
