Scrabble players will now be able to use words like hashtag, bromance, frenemy and selfie when playing the game. Those are among the 5,000 words being added to "The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary," which will be published by Merriam-Webster August 11.
Among the other new entries in the board game’s official dictionary are such sign of the times words as texter, dubstep, buzzkill, chillax, beatbox, mixtape and mojito. “Geocache was also added, voted into the dictionary by the public during a Facebook contest in May,” reports NBC News
This is the first time the dictionary has been updated in a decade. NBC News reports, “The new words add about 40 pages to the Scrabble-sanctioned dictionary, which already lists more than 100,000 playable words.”
“To be included in the 36-year-old book — this is the fifth edition — a word must be found in a standard dictionary, can't require capitalization, can't have hyphens or apostrophes and can't be an abbreviation, in addition to being two to eight letters,” according to NBC.
