Up To $20,000 Missing From Hillsboro School PTO Fund

LEIPERS FORK, Tenn. - Up to $20,000 has been reported missing from a mid-state PTO and officials said it may have been stolen.

The sign outside Hillsboro Elementary and Middle School Monday said it was Parent Info night. Their kids are back for another school year.

Those parents won't be getting information about a new batch of computers that were supposed to be bought for their kids.

The computer were to be bought with an estimated $20,000 that has gone missing from the school’s PTO fund.

“We are completely devastated,” said PTO President-elect Jennifer Smith. “We've started a task force in conjunction with the county schools to determine what we can do to create some better safeguards for the future. We're sick to our stomachs, honestly.”

Smith said only two people have access to the account.

It was just last week that they noticed the money missing.

Now, authorities are investigating.

“We have no reason to believe that this was some sort of large conspiracy that happened in the Hillsboro PTO,” said Williamson County Director of Schools Dr. Mike Looney. “I think this was an individual that did inappropriate things. They'll be held accountable.”

Dr. Looney said multiple signatures are required before money can be withdrawn.

That process may have to now change.

Fundraising has started once again to make up for that money.

NewsChannel 5 contacted one of the people who has access to the account. They did not return a request for comment.

The PTO had the account insured, so members are hopeful the money will be recovered.
