Rhea County Deputy Fatally Shoots Man In Hospital

DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities said a Rhea County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man in the emergency room of the local hospital.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the shooting happened early Friday.
Officials said the 23-year-old man was in custody and had been taken to the Rhea Medical Center for treatment for an injury at about 2 a.m.
Authorities said the man, identified as Steven Lee Howell, took a weapon from one of the two deputies escorting him. The other deputy fired the fatal shot.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
