NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 47-year-old man was killed Saturday during a collision with a parked semi-truck on the shoulder of Interstate 40 eastbound in Nashville.

Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said the incident was reported just before 11 a.m. at mile marker 212, not far from Fesslers Lane.

Metro Police said Michael Giles was killed when his minivan somehow left the roadway and collided with the trailer of a semi-truck that was parked on the shoulder of the interstate.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, 35-year-old Mengesha Haile, had apparently pulled over due to mechanical problems. Police said he was parked several feet away from the roadway and placed reflective triangle warning signs behind the trailer.

Haile was standing in front of the truck during the collision. He was not injured during the impact.

Giles reportedly died on the scene.

Further blood tests will be conducted to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.

The far right lane of I-40 eastbound was blocked for several hours while officials worked to clear the scene.
