Deadline Nears For Signing Wine In Grocery Stores Petition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – There is less than three days to go in the push to get wine in grocery stores on the November ballot.

Petition drive organizers are kicking things into overdrive.

The nonprofit, Red White and Food say they've turned in close to 40,000 signatures in Davidson county. Less than half of that is actually needed to get the measure on the ballot.

Verifying those signatures is taking time.

Organizers say they expect to see the election commission throw out quite a few signatures for being invalid.

That's why they've tried to collect at least double what they needed.

Nashville would be the latest in a number of cities across Tennessee in which voters will be able to weigh in on wine in grocery stores.

"We’ve already heard in 52 cities, 52 municipalities we have reached the number we needed. But we still have several areas yet to be complete,” said Kroger spokesperson Melissa Eads.

The deadline to turn in petitions for a November referendum is Thursday, August 21st.

If voters approve the measures wine could hit grocery stores shelves on July 1, 2016.
