NASHVILLE, Tenn - Construction is set to begin next week on a massive mixed-use development in midtown Nashville.
"Buckingham Midtown" will feature retail, a boutique hotel and hundreds of residential units.
The site, near Broadway, 21st Avenue and Division Street, is nearly two acres and roughly the size of half a city block.
Looking at the renderings many have wondered whether the 17-story project will fit there.
Scott Travis, the Senior Vice President of Development for Buckingham Companies, assured it will, and there will be more space along the sidewalk.
“The towers basically come to the back of the property line so there's a respect for the street facade and not having a 17 or 16 story building next to the street,” he said.
The city is taking the construction as an opportunity to fix a few intersections and crosswalks at 21st and Broadway.
“It's kind of a perfect storm to get something fixed that we've wanted to take care of for a long time,” said Metro Public Works Engineer Chip Knauf. “At the same time we were doing a pedestrian safety study which stated that area needed some pedestrian upgrades.”
The two towers will be under construction until 2016 and 2017.
Fixing all the intersections and crosswalks will take until 2016.
