RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. – An accused burglar who authorities believe stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry from homes in five counties has been taken into custody.

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said a deputy stopped a car in the Rockvale area on Wednesday. The car matched the description of one allegedly involved in an attempted burglary on Hutson Road a short time earlier.

The deputy said he heard something drop as he approached the vehicle, and determined it was more than 100 prescription pills.

The driver, 34-year-old David Zwarton of Tullahoma, was taken into custody on three counts of felony possession of prescription pills.

While searching the car, authorities said they found $12,000 cash and a large amount of jewelry.

Rutherford County detectives contacted law enforcement in four other counties who reported home burglaries with a similar vehicle description.

Detectives from Franklin, Bedford, Moore and Coffee counties searched through the stolen property recovered from the car. About $25,000 worth of jewelry was identified as being stolen from a Franklin County home.

In total, investigators think Zwarton could be responsible for more than 25 recent burglaries.

Authorities were working to get the stolen goods back to the rightful owners.

Zwarton was released on $3,000 bond. A hearing was set for Augus 27 in General Sessions Court.

Authorities in Franklin and Moore counties have obtained warrants charging him with aggravated burglary and theft, and more charges were pending.
