NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 25-year-old police officer was seriously injured in a crash Sunday morning, while pursuing a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting.
Officials with Metro Nashville Police Department said Officer Nicholas Berens was critically injured while he and another policeman were pursuing a suspect down Bell Road in South Nashville.
Police said Berens was traveling down the road when a motorist in front of him suddenly stopped and turned left. He reportedly swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting the car and slammed into a tree on the side of the road.
Berens was pinned inside the vehicle for nearly 30 minutes while firefighters worked to free him from the cruiser.
He was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was said to be in stable condition. Investigators said Berens is recovering several fractures, contusions and cuts.
It was not immediately known whether or not the shooting suspect was apprehended. Police said the driver of the other vehicle drove away after the crash.
