'Jillcam' goes inside Team USA's training in Italy

By Jessie Garcia. CREATED Jan 23, 2014

America's speedskaters, including the 10 who hail from Wisconsin, are in the mountains of Italy doing outdoor training for the Sochi Olympics.

"Hey Milwaukee, this is day two in Collalbo, Italy," Jilleanne Rookard said greeting TODAY'S TMJ4 viewers from her phone we're dubbing "Jill Cam."

"Yesterday was my first day outside, ever, and it was actually prety fun.  We're on our way to the weights room."

Jill also hangs out with fellow speedskater Anna Ringsred.  They're both used to training indoors, so this is quite different.

Still, the older skaters always practiced in nature.

"I asked Eric Heiden today if he ever trained indoors, and he said never.  I thought that was kind of funny."

Heiden, who's from Madison, won a record five gold medals at the 1980 Lake Placid Games.  He's now a doctor.

Team USA's snazzy new competition gear seems to be drawing interest from Dutch skaters and others training in Collalbo.

"They're spying on our skin suits - top secret.  Every time we go by, we hear a 'Whoom!' like a jet fighter.  It's actually pretty cool."

Finally, it was time to go back and rest.

"We stay in a nice little Italian villa...it's kind of amazing.  There it is.  It's pretty cool.  We can't complain."

Team USA will stay in Collalbo for eight days.
