Heavy snow and near white-out conditions are being blamed for a horrific pileup in I-94 near Michigan City, Ind., Thursday afternoon involving nearly four dozen vehicles, many of them semi trucks.
Three people were killed, two at the scene and one at a hospital, and more than 20 motorists were injured. LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan called the fatal scene — with mangled trucks and cars — “very grim,” reports CBS Chicago.
Thousands more were stuck in their vehicles behind the pileup for hours.
A witness told WGN Chicago that visibility before the accident was less than one and a half car lengths
The Eastbound side of the interstate is expected to remain closed on Friday.
