Support grows for suspended 'Duck Dynasty' star

By Joyce Lupiani. CREATED Dec 19, 2013

A star of the wildly popular show "Duck Dynasty" is facing some backlash for his beliefs. Many people are up in arms over remarks Phil Robertson made during a magazine interview, and he has even been suspended from the hit series on A&E.

But he is also getting a lot of support on social media from both straight and not-so-straight individuals and religious and not-so religious people.

Robertson, the patriarch of the "Duck Commander" family, is under fire for anti-gay remarks that he made during an interview with GQ Magazine. During the interview, Robertson gave his opinion about homosexuality based upon his Christian faith.

Robertson told the magazine that there was a problem with sin in America and, when he was asked what he though was sinful, he replied: "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."

He wasn't just picking on the gays though. Robertson also talked about greed, substance abuse and adultery -- all of which are not accepted by most religions, and also included some eyebrow-raising comments about African Americans. The "Duck Dynasty" family has never made a secret of the fact that they are a conservative religious bunch and have described themselves as "Bible thumpers."

Even so, gay rights groups pounced on what he said and called it "hate speech." He was suspended from "Duck Dynasty" shortly after by A&E Network.

As of this morning, there is a petition on that calls for him to return to the show. So far, it has more than 39,000 signatures.

There is also a supportive Facebook page with more than 50,000 likes.

And Twitter has been flooded since the whole thing began by many people expressing support of his right to free speech. The #StandWithPhil hashtag quickly started trending on the social media platform.

It's not just regular people who are supporting Robertson. Politician Sarah Palin is also coming to his defense.
