The father of Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza says he wishes his son hadn’t been born.

As Boston’s WCVB reports, Peter Lanza told a writer for The New Yorker that he and his ex-wife never suspected their son was dangerous.
It’s been 15 months since his son went on a rampage in Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, killing 20 kids and six teachers as well as his mother Nancy at her home.
Breaking the silence he’s maintained since then, Peter Lanza says, “I want people to be afraid of the fact that this could happen to them. It doesn’t have to be understood to be real.”
Lanza says his son wasn’t always that way. A kid who loved Sandy Hook, he bought Christmas toys for needy students. But the father says it was all downhill after middle school. Adam never really accepted his diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome.
Peter and Nancy Lanza split in 2001. He says he hadn’t spoken with his son in the two years leading up to that fateful day in 2012. Now, Peter Lanza says he wishes his son had never been born.
He says, “You can’t get any more evil . . . How much do I beat up on myself about the fact that he’s my son? A lot.” He also said, “With hindsight, I know Adam would have killed me in a heartbeat if he’d had the chance. I don’t question that for a minute.”
As for the thousands of cards and letter of support he’s received, he’s finally started to go through them. He’s even met two of the families whose lives were torn apart by his son, saying, “It was gut-wrenching. A victim’s family member told me that they forgave Adam. I didn’t even know how to respond.”
Peter Lanza said he considered changing his name to avoid the spotlight after the shooting, but in the end, he said that would be like pretending Sandy Hook never happened and, in his words, “That’s not right.”
