Embracing New Technology

DE PERE - High-tech devices that were once banned from school grounds are now being encouraged in the classroom. One De Pere elementary school is now using this technology to transform the way they teach.

Heritage Elementary School recently received a grant from Wisconsin Technology Initiative that's getting students eager to learn.

Instead of using an old-style chalkboard, the classroom has upgraded. Interactive whiteboards make it as easy as swiping your finger to get something done. Students can hear and see what they're doing, plus it gets kids up and out of their chairs.

Integrating technology has been a long sought-after initiative at the school. About a year and a half ago, principal Kathy Van Pay helped put together a committee of parents and staff members from throughout the district.

The school started out by raising funds through parent-teacher organizations. Then, they pulled some money from building budgets. With the help of a $72,000 grant from the Wisconsin Technology Initiative, the school's dreams became a reality.
