NBC26 Cares: Getting Fit and Giving Back

Ashwaubenon, WI -- Many of us make New Year's resolutions to lose weight. We want to look good and feel better. But for an Ashwaubenon woman, her journey to becoming fit includes helping others along the way. 

"It's been my battle my whole life," said Beth Fiscus.

A war with weight.

"I can't remember when I was ever thin."

Beth Fiscus reached nearly 450 pounds. She remembers the turning point during a trip with her kids to an amusement park.

"I couldn't fit on the ride. So I got off, cried, bawled my head off and let them enjoy life, and at that point my son told me, 'You know it's time you lose weight mom.'" 

After four years of failed fad diets, "I could probably write a book on everything I've tried." Beth took the old fashioned approach. Exercising and eating healthy.

"I feel awesome. I like the idea that now I have energy and I don't sit on a chair all day, and I can climb a set of stairs and not be dying when I get to the top of the stairs." 

Beth limits herself to 1,500 calories a day and exercises seven days a week to fitness DVDs her son, Zach encouraged her to buy. With the help of her workout buddy, Beth has lost 150 pounds over the past two and a half years.

"It's kind of inspiring really because it's like she's my mom right, so she's been there my whole life, and then she's doing these huge life changes, so I'm like well what can I do to do better in my life?" said Zach. 

Beth adds, "I think God put me on the earth to motivate people."  

More than 1,300 people follow her facebook page called "Beth's Way to Fitness." It features healthy recipes, motivational quotes and a pledge to help the community.  For every 10 pounds she loses this year, Beth will knit a scarf to donate to a local charity.

Zach says, "It's the sort of thing parents are supposed to do right? They lift you up and show you what people can really be." 

Knitting keeps Beth's mind off of food. She hopes it will help her reach her goal of losing another 100 pounds this year, but she says the real satisfaction comes from helping others.  

"I like that I'm going to put a scarf around a child's neck and know that child is going to be warm when they go to school," said Beth. "And one day they'll pay it forward and give it on to someone else." 

Beth also plans to donate 50 scarves for every 5,000 "Likes" she gets on her facebook page.
