WINNEBAGO COUNTY - Winnebago County is on high alert after two dead crows tested positive for West Nile virus in Neenah.

The virus is spread to humans through a bite from infected mosquitoes. Winnebago County's health officer says this is the first confirmation of the virus since the county started testing in May.

"We have reported cases or probable or confirmed cases that occur within the state every year. Last year was a particularly busy year. There were about 57 cases of West Nile Virus reported," said Health Officer Doug Gieryn.

Health leaders say everyone should take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites this summer. The illness can be fatal in older adults.
