Shipwreck in Path of Fox River Cleanup to be Removed
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Fox River Clean Up Group held a briefing today to mark the start of shipwreck debris removal near the project's processing facility in Green Bay.
The remnants of five sunken 19th century vessels need to be removed before dredging can continue. The vessels are tugboats and barges that were either intentionally sunk or allowed to sink decades ago after outliving their useful working life.
The site area has been nominated to the National Registry of Historical Places so workers needed federal permission to do anything with the wrecks.
Photographs of the wrecks will be taken and delivered to the Neville Public Museum. The wreckage itself will be sent to a landfill.
