MARINETTE, Wis--U.S Senator Tammy Baldwin visited the Marinette Marine Corporation Tuesday. The shipyard is currently building 5 Lockheed Martin Littoral Combat Ship for the U.S Navy. The LCS program has come under fire after two congressional reports released last month questioned the weight of the ship and the high cost.
Lockheed Martin says most of the criticism stems from the first ship.USS Freedom but since that ship launch the companies have been able to cut production costs by half.
"The shipyard has learned from it's prototypes and has changed accordingly and again is now getting into the serial production," said Baldwin.
Baldwin says she plans to support the program to congress this fall.
