FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- A documentary that shows two families' long histories catching the elusive and primitive Lake Sturgeon will premiere at Fond du Lac's Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts Thursday.

The Reporter Media reported Tuesday that Emmy award-winning director Steve Boettcher's film "The Frozen Chosen" features the Muche and Schumacher families. Both are from the Fond du Lac area and have storied pasts spearing sturgeons.

Anglers sometimes spend years searching for the fish, which can weigh in at hundreds of pounds. Boettcher, an Appleton native, says his film focuses on state agencies' attempts to protect the species' population.

The premiere comes just days before the opening of sturgeon spearing season Saturday on Lake Winnebago and Upriver Lakes.
