Green Bay--A new 76-unit apartment complex breaks ground in downtown Green Bay on Thursday.
The City Deck Landing luxury apartments will be built at the corner of North Washington and Main Streets.
T Wall Enterprises has been named the developer in the $10 million project. When completed, the building will house 76 apartments and almost 9,000 square feet of retail and green space.
"This is awesome. I mean this is the next step of a revitalized downtown," said Mayor Jim Schmitt of Green Bay.
The hope is to connect businesses with living space and draw more people into the downtown.
"It's right close by to restaurants like Hagemeister, Koko's Sushi and Fox Heights Pub and Grill, so residents here will have plenty within walking distance," said Executive Director of Downtown Green Bay Inc. Jeff Mirkes.
The 76 apartments will consist of studio, one and two bedroom units and penthouse suites, all with underground parking.
"The rent goes anywhere from the mid $700's for a studio to the low $2,000's for a penthouse," said Green Bay Economic Development Director, Greg Flisram.
This is just the first apartment building to break ground, another one will be built a few blocks down bringing an additional 74 units to downtown.
"It's a much needed apartment building, there is need for units. All the units currently are filled up in the downtown area, so this is going to be adding to the need," said SMET construction project manager, Kevin Hansen.
Construction on the apartments is expected to be completed by March of 2015.
